September 24, 2009-Charleston, South Carolina

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We had a full day on our plate.    We took a tour of the Magnolia Plantation, which is the largest plantation that is privately owned.    It dates back about 14 generations back....into the 1800s.      This particular one is still a working plantation.  Took a walk around the gardens which were beautiful.    Also, took a tram ride around the property and saw some alligators in the swamps.    We toured the home, which had some original furniture dating back 300 yrs and were in such wonderful condition.    
One quilt on the bed took a woman her entire life to make.   I don't think I would have the patience to do quilting. 


After the plantation tour, we took a 90 minute city tour around Charleston which was interesting.      What I found out is that these large mansions down by the waterfront were owned by the plantation owners.  They would stay there in the summer months and have formal parties at those homes.    Plus, the homes were close to port, so they could have guests come to visit very easily.


Thanks to my friend Janelle's suggestion, we ate at Hyman's Seafood restaurant which was delicious. We had the flounder.   You could eat one side of it and then flip it over to eat the other side.   Many famous movie stars have dined at this restaurant such as:  Sandra Bulluck, Oprah, Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Cyndi Lauper,  Jimmy Buffet, and Mel Gibson.   There are pictures of them on the walls, as well as individual plates signed by the stars.


We wandered around Battery Park, the mansions, Rainbow Row, and Waterford Park.   


There is alot to do in Charleston, so if you come, be sure to have extra money.

September 23, 2009-Asheville, NC to Charleston, South Carolina

 

 

We left Asheville this morning but stopped at the Grove Inn hotel in Asheville.   It is a cobblestone hotel up in the mountains that overlooks the city and surrounding mountainside.    It is truly gorgeous.  Many past Presidents have stayed here, such as George Bush, Bill Clinton, Teddy Roosevelt, and Obama.   Also,  Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Mr. Firestone,  President Lyndon Johnson's wife, etc, have stayed at the hotel.  I can see why, as it is gorgeous.    The golf course is to die for.      In the lobby, there is the biggest fireplace I have ever seen in my life.   


I really was impressed with what I saw of North Carolina. I do want to check out some other cities in that state on a different trip.    I think I have come to the realization that I really don't like humid weather. I am definitely getting out of Muskegon, but just not sure where yet.    Ann Arbor comes to my mind many times.  One thing I have found as I get older is that I like the change in seasons, but not winter.    


I could tell a big difference once we left North Carolina and entered South Carolina.    The topography almost immediately changed from the beautiful mountains to more straight, maybe hilly roads (like in Iowa).    And I got a kick out of the road signs...they had the wrong signs up  (eg.  left lane closed when it was the right lane closed) or the signs posted on the northbound highway with the writing towards our side.  I thought it was very strange.


We have gone from a 4 star hotel to probably a 2 star.  It isn't as bad as the hotel in Detroit across from the stadium, but close enough.   The hotels we wanted to stay at in downtown were already booked up or they were way too expensive.    We are making reservations as we go along on this trip, as we aren't 100% sure each day where we will be.      Hopefully, we can get a better hotel in Savannah.  We are about 1.5 miles from the downtown.    


We went walking around downtown Charleston tonight and got to the waterfront and on the ground were all of this big bugs scurrying all over the place. I was freaking out.   I guess they are palmetto bugs.    They look like huge cockroaches and you know me and bugs.....I go crazy when I see them.   Maybe that is why I should not live in a humid climate.  The girl at the restaurant said you get used to it and see them in your home.    That would drive me up a wall.   


Tomorrow, we are going to take some tours of the city and a plantation.      I will send some pictures in tomorrow's email.

September 22, 2009-Biltmore Estate

 

 

 

 

 

We spent the entire day on the Biltmore Estate property and surrounding area.     It is about a 3 mile drive from the entrance to get to the home.    The road winds around through the beautiful woods.    The entrance into the estate alone is beautiful and picturesque.   From the parking lot, it is about an 8 minute walk to the home.  


If you go to the home, definitely rent the audio as it will give you more information on each of the rooms.   Mr. Vanderstelt was the most sought after bachelor in that day.   Imagine being his wife.  They got married in Paris and took a 4 month honeymoon in Europe and then came back to this huge Estate. Wouldn't that be sweet?  :o)    They had 1 daughter, Cornelia,  who was born in the home, as well as Cornelia's two sons some years later. 


After the tour of the home, we checked out the gardens to the left of the home.   They were working on planting new plants.    The best time to see the gardens would probably be in the spring or summer.    But, it was still nice to see.    I would love to see what their garden bill is.   


Stopped at the winery which is right down the hill from our hotel.     They have a short tour of the winery and then, of course, wine tasting at the end.   That sure tasted good.


They are working on building a new shopping area next to the winery which should be done in Spring 2010.


It was nice to take a nap this afternoon as I haven't rested much on this trip.    


We had dinner at the hotel.    Tomorrow, we head down to Charleston, South Carolina.   Here are a few photos from today.  

September 21, 2009-Asheville, North Carolina

We left Pigeon Forge this morning and headed to Asheville, NC.   We went through Dolly Parton's town in Sieverville, Tennessee.  There isn't much to it.  I am sure she has a place up in the mountains. I found a picture on the internet as well as the street name, but her mail goes to Los Angeles, so I couldn't get the house number.   


We had a beautiful drive through the mountains to Asheville.    I am impressed with Asheville.  It is a nice size city.   I am not sure my mom likes it as much as I do.    Their top industry is tourism which isn't high paying.  I have talked to several store clerks who say finding a job isn't easy here either. They say that Charlotte and Raleigh are better places for jobs.    I know I am going to go back to school once my credit cards are paid off and get a degree in something that will actually get me somewhere.


We took a 2 hr trolley tour around town and learned a few things.   We saw the Victorian home that was used in the Sandra Bulluck movie "28 Days".    It is the scene in which Sandra falls out of the window.     Also, learned that after the Great Depression, the downtown and many of the historical homes were boarded up and remained that way for close to 50 yrs.  Asheville had an enormous debt after the Great Depression, which also took them about 50 years to repay.


We are staying at the "Inn at Biltmore" on the premises.  It is up in the hills and our room overlooks the mountains and valley.    We are feeling like queens staying here.


We did some shopping at Biltmore Village and then had dinner at the Biltmore McDonalds, which was featured on the food and travel channels, as it is a fancier McDonalds.   They have chandeliers, fireplace, and grand piano inside.    The floors are marble and the ceiling is copper.     The prices of the food are the same as any other McDonalds, so we got off cheap tonight.


Then, we drove downtown to the Chocolate Fetish and got some chocolate and then went to the Frenchbread chocolate lounge and had a truffle hot cocoa.  It was delicious.    They have big couches and tables there which were comfortable.  


Hoping someday I meet a nice fella that enjoys traveling like I do and that I am treated better than the guys I have been meeting.    Playing games with me is a waste of time.   Guys who do that are not worth my time, as I know I deserve to be treated better than that.   I am educated, have a kind heart,  most of the time, enjoying doing fun things, etc.   Please keep me in your prayers!  


Tomorrow, we will spend most of the day at the Biltmore Estate.  We drove by it tonight on our way back to the hotel. The road leading up to it is about 3 miles long through the lush woods.    It truly is a beautiful place.

September 20, 2009: Pigeon Forge and Dollywood

Today, we went the day at Dollywood. It rained off and on the whole day. We enjoyed the Family Reunion show there that features some of the aunts, uncles, and cousins of Dolly Parton.


They had some nice shows there. I didn't go on the roller coasters, as I didn't want to go in the rain.


The traffic around Pigeon Forge was much better today. It was like night and day. We had no problem driving around today around down which was a blessing.


Tomorrow, we are headed to Asheville, NC. We have reservations for 2 nights at the Inn at Biltmore which will be really nice. It is a 4 star hotel right near the Estate.


When I get back from vacation, I am going to seriously get crackin' on getting all of this weight off that I have been packing on. I am sick of being this heavy and not going to attract a good man being so overweight. There isn't much in Muskegon to choose from, so I also will need to move out of Muskegon when I get my 10 yrs in. But, I don't want my focus to be on finding a man, as I don't want that to be my 'goal' as there are more things in life.

Saturday, September 19, Lexington, KY to Pigeon Forge, TN

We left Georgetown, KY around 8 a.m. We decided we had to see the downtown of Georgetown, so we drove around. It was a cute little town. Georgetown College is there. It is a small Baptist college.


I found Paris, Kentucky. Yep, that is as close to Paris as I will get for a while. ha ha


Stopped at the Kentucky Horse Park to check that out. We didn't go on a tour as it is $15 and didn't have the time to go, but wanted to see where it is. It is beautiful there. I love the countryside. They have fences all around the horse farms. Kentucky has the most horses in the world.


Drove down through downtown Lexington. There are several high rises there. We stopped to see Mary Todd's childhood home which is on Main St. She was married to President Abraham Lincoln. She came from a family of 16 kids. Can you imagine having that many kids? LOL


The drive down I-75 South is beautiful with the curves and mountains along the way.


We got to Pigeon Forge, TN and the traffic was horrible. The main street going through is bumper to bumper traffic. We didn't like that. It is worse than Chicago or LA on that road. Apparently, there is a car show in town that is drawing a bunch of people.


We are staying at the Old Christmas Tree Inn which is decorated in Christmas theme in the rooms, as well as throughout the complex.


We went to the Dixie Stampede which was alot of fun. We had a nice dinner, which you had to eat with your hands...no silverware. LOL


The traffic coming back to the hotel was still horrible. Hundreds of people were even sitting in their lawn chairs on both sides of the main road watching the cars go by. We got off that road and went the back road back to the hotel, as who knows how long you would be sitting there.


Tomorrow, we are off to Dollywood for the day. I am trying to find where Dolly Parton's home is. I have the street name, but no house number, so need to figure that out.

Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 - Georgetown, KY

We drove around 400+ miles today so decided to stop around 5 p.m. and ended up in Georgetown, Kentucky, which is around 200 miles away from Pigeon Forge. I am not big on nighttime driving, so like to be at a hotel well before that. What really got me is that I saw a city called Paris nearby. You know how I am a sucker for Paris. I love that city and can’t wait to go back, hopefully in a couple of years.

Anyway, Georgetown is named after George Washington. Toyota has a large manufacturing plant here. I talked to a sales clerk in a store today who said it is really hard to get a full-time job at the Toyota company here. You have to go through a temp agency and do that for 2 years before they will even hire you. It sounds like there aren’t a lot of full time jobs here, but many part-time positions.

As you know, one of the primary reasons of this trip is to scope out some of the states I am interested in moving to in a couple of years.

We had a nice dinner at Ruby Tuesdays which is right next to our hotel. We are staying at a Fairfield and the whole building is non-smoking which is great.

I have to tell you, though, that it seems to take forever to get down here via 31 South. Dang, both the GPS and the AAA route both had us go down 31 South until you get to Indianapolis. It seemed like it took forever. It was nicer when we got onto I-275 and then onto I-75. I think it has us routed a different way on the way home as we will be coming home from Atlanta.

The Kentucky Derby isn’t far from here. I would like to go to that sometime. It looks quite interesting.

Well, I will keep you guys updated on a daily basis as to where I am. Maybe I should make my first book about traveling. I think I could think of some humorous stories.
